I did not let it soak, really, I just did a cycle. Hi! I ended up abandoning the project after the citric acid. I use washing soda, Borax, or Oxy as boosters, depending on the fabrics, but no boosters for darks, other than a little Dawn on stains. Maybe they have left residue in the washer, bc they don't have similar surfectants? I'm on Purex free at the moment. Over the last year or so, I have been experimenting with super-gentle, grey-water laundry detergents, bc we plan on a grey water system. But if I have a residue problem, what would work on it? Should I take the machine apart, or run a hot bleach wash first, or.? Kill it with fire? There's no odor, I'm not concerned about mold. I don't think ultraviolet, chemical laundry routines are a good idea. I don't buy into all that hot-water, oh-but-all-the-germs jazz. Everything sparkles with it, I wish I had a third tap on my sink just for distilled vinegar, but I suspect I'd then find out that white vinegar harms baby manatees and I'd have to quit it. The vinegar helps as a rinse aid, I use it in the laundry, on my hair and in the dishwasher, too. Sometimes we get a lousy tank that hasn't been reconditioned well. It's an imperfect system, but much better than nothing. The softener is on both lines for showers and all the fixtures that dispense H & C water, so they don't get scaly. The softener company delivers a tank that's replaced every couple weeks, more often when we have guests. No, the owners did not have a softener system, hence the replumbing job we did on the house and installation of a rented, salt-free, softener system. When my washer handed down by my mom started throwing greyish lint it also would not come off in the dryer it stuck like glue.a tear down of the washer showed why.it was loaded with built up scum and mold, was one of the most disgusting things.my mom only washed in cold which caused this. Dont feel bad dear many people don't realize this stuff lol. Bedding gets fiber logged with body oils that will not wash out in less than at least very warm, hot best. Dish towels harbor all sorts of bacteria and should be laundered on either a chemical or thermal wash. many textiles simply can not be cleaned in less than hot or very warm.like underwear, everyone has a certain amount of e-coli in their system that is left in those unmentionables. Also textiles will need to be replaced much sooner.this also causes dust mite allergies, dust mites require hot water to kill. you won't be saving the life of the washer or any following it by washing mostly in cold or luke warm. I understand the thought behind saving energy by doing cold washes, but there's another side to that coin. You say you have a water softener, if its working correctly you wouldn't have hard water. Much better since we had a wet spring, though! The most remarkable thing about my laundry setup is the hard water, I think. I do a hot water whites with Oxy maybe once every two months, if that, bc the Oxy seems to work ok in warm water. I never use chlorine bleach anymore but I use a lot of Oxy. Hot water and bleach would be a last resort. ![]() I usually let it fill a few seconds on warm, or the whole load warm, because it's not overly warm water, so I'm not very concerned about the energy. Our water in the washer is never really cold, even on the cold setting. The inside of the dishwasher looked like someone had taken cream cheese frosting and swiped the interior with it-it was that thick! May there be some hardness clogging up the works, despite my assiduous use of vinegar? Given the hard water, should I try a citric acid wash? Would that harm the machine? The prior owner was not aggressive against the hard water the way I am, they just went with it. I'd also like to try taking apart the machine to see what's in there. I'm surprised how high the manual says I can load the washer, I never load it as high as they suggest. I'd like to try loading less clothes (though I rarely have laundry peeking above the water line when it's agitating. ![]() I put some of it in the softener dispenser.įinding the detergent balance is tough due to the hard water, and I rarely use more than one rinse, to save water. white vinegar per load of laundry, every time. For the hardness, the house is fitted with a water softener and I use about 3/4 c. There is also not a line exactly on the agitator, but a smudge just around the outlet for softener. ![]() The minerals accumulate on everything, incl. We have super hard water, off the charts.
